VIS Supervision Coordination Group

The Visa Information System Supervision Coordination Group (VIS SCG) is a forum that allows data protection authorities responsible for supervision of the Visa Information System (VIS) to collaborate. The VIS SCG consists of one representative of each Member State's data protection authority and the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). The United Kingdom and Ireland's data protection authorities participate as permanent observers. The VIS SCG administrative services are provided by the EDPS.

The VIS is the European Union's central information system for the issuing of short-term visas (also called Schengen visas) and for combating "visa shopping". The EDPS supervises the processing of personal data in the VIS information system (central unit) and its transmission to the Member States. Data protection authorities in the Member States supervise the processing of data by the national authorities, and the transmission of this data to the central unit.

VIS SCG is responsible for coordinating supervisory activities and common inspections, ensuring conformity with the data protection rules in the VIS regulation, the visa code, the Council Decision 2008/633/JHA and issuing recommendations for member states and the central unit. At regular meetings, participants exchange experiences, discuss problems and look for solutions relating to the functioning of the VIS. Representatives of the European Commission services and the European Union IT agency also take part in these meetings.
